Introduction

· The Bible can be explained as a library, rather than a book. It is no known as the “word of God” (Newland, 1999. Pg. 6) and must be read with an open mind as it the scriptures can nurture and change the life of those who approach them with an open heart. The word Bible originates from the Greek word biblia, which means ‘books’ (Charpentier, 1981). The reason we may look at the Bible as a library is because it is a large collection of writings. More specifically the Bible consists of two major parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the stories of God, which come before the birth of Jesus, and the New Testament is after the birth of Jesus and focus’ on Jesus’ life and ways. The Old Testament is where we encounter God. The book of the Bible I have chosen to focus on is Amos, Amos is a prophet of the Bible and can be defined as the prophet of social justice (Catholic Youth Bible, 2004).
